the store/herald pub was approved for 9am to 2am hours.

I'm unclear on where exactly this new pub is going to be located in that building?

Is it around the back where the train tracks used to be?

Ahhh, thanks Mike ... in between the Grindstone and Opus.

That seems like a great location ... I wonder if it will inspire somebody to do something across Herald Street? - an spot desperate for something besides a giant vacant building, and a half a city block of surface parking.

Right, and that's inevitably coming. Le Fevre has gotten the ball rolling in that regard with his Ironworks projects and the rest will fall into place.

looks like the tc and i both spoke too soon.

vote was 7-2 in the morning and all fell apart in the evening.

A proposal to add a 178-seat lounge to the new Herald Street Brew Works was given the thumbs up by Victoria councillors at a committee meeting on Thursday, only to be referred back to staff at a council meeting later in the day.

Note to readers: This story has been updated to reflect the fact that councillors, at their March 14 council meeting, asked staff to work with the applicant to review the closing time and occupant load.

Thornton-Joe's statement from yesterday that prompted the correction:

This article is incorrect. It was approved at the morning Committee of the Whole meeting By a majority (Myself and Geoff voted against) but by evening’s Council, after receiving 8 more letters including 1 from the Chinatown Care Centre up the block, the vote changed asking staff to work with the applicant to see if numbers can be reduced and the closing time be earlier. Phillips Tasting Bar a few blocks away closes at 10pm and the Drake which is on Pandora closes at midnight. My understanding is that this establishment is similar to the Drake and has the same owner.

One of the concerns that many of the letter writers expressed was when they went to a meeting for the application, they were told that the numbers were 100 and the closing was midnight. Then to hear that the application was brought to council with a number of 175 and a closing hour of 2am was upsetting to many. I hope the applicant will consider the residents that live in this neighbourhood.

It's been known for a long-time the premises will have 134 seats, as per the planning docs. Capacity will typically be higher than the number of seats.

So why the lack of such easily attainable information?

how do 8 more letters arrive from 1pm to 7pm?  unless someone goes and solicits them all.

anyway now the applicant will have to change it to close at 1am 150 and then it'll fly

They don't.

The current crop are simply a bunch of liars who don't do their homework.

And when they're caught by the public performing less than due diligence, or just plain being stupid ... they're notorious for adjusting the narrative to fit the story ... more often than not - well after the fact (or in this case, 8 hours after the fact).

Last call will come earlier for a proposed downtown Victoria brewpub, but it will keep its proposed 178 occupancy load.

Victoria councillors have decided to endorse an application from Mike and Lee Spence, owners of the Drake Eatery, for a new brewpub at 506 Herald St. to be attached to the brewery.

The Spences had hoped for a licence to operate between 9 a.m. and 2 a.m., but council instead endorsed operating hours of 9 a.m. until midnight Sunday through Thursday and 9 a.m. to 1 a.m. Friday and Saturday.

https://www.timescol...ancy-1.23775849

Isitt noted that the applicant had originally suggested an occupancy of 100 to the Downtown Residents Association when they believed a rezoning would have been needed, and an occupancy load of 150 “is still a lot of people consuming alcohol.”

Isitt added there were extremely limited food services proposed.

“That is the type of scenario that leads to more overconsumption and intoxication and resulting social impacts on individuals and the community,” Isitt said.

Yeah, and those safe consumption sites and on street drug use has no social impacts on the community.
