But they are required to have integrity

Pubs maybe, but certainly not most journalists these days.

I would be very disappointed in them if that is so

Why don't we have more (any?) cruises out of the harbour with liquor service?

I think I've been on this one, many many years ago.

That’s a 90s thing.

You gotta evolve a little. Nowadays people charter a private luxury yacht if they want to hang with their friends, regardless of whether the boat leaves the dock or not.

The Hour Sail:

Depart 10 am or 2pm Adult: $145 + tx
13 – 17 yrs: $135 + tx
2 - 12 yrs: $125 + tx

You are welcome to bring along a picnic on your sail, as we do not have food available for purchase. There are many local restaurants near the dock which offer takeaway meals and snacks for your enjoyment.

Alcohol is permitted on board (within reason). We have coolers, ice, glasses and bottle openers available for our guests. However, our sailings are family friendly – we are not a booze cruise!

Be sure to arrive at least 15 minutes prior to departure. Departure times may vary slightly due to weather and special events in Victoria’s Inner Harbour.

Maybe in Victoria. There are boat trips all over the world that include alcohol service.

A couple years ago I took one in St. John’s harbour. Didn’t have to charter the whole boat. It was no booze cruise but it had drinks. It was good. $95 maybe?

Edmonton is huge for it, for sure. I tell people all the time, their booze cruises are the best.

Sounds like it was quickly contained. Started at their meat smoker.

It would make a good development site, provided the soil is clean. Nice ocean views from there (although it’s not really ocean, as aastra would say).

People rave about the wings there. Folks just walk on the ferry and head over for food and drink.

The Palms opens new upscale sports bar in Victoria

Owner Rob Ekstrom says bar helps restaurant utilize space, and fills gap in Victoria’s sports bar scene

Ekstrom found the Victoria bar scene had limited options for watching sports and now aims to create his own niche in the scene, which has been supported by feedback from his regular guests and friends.

“I’m old school. I remember some of the old beer parlours and stuff like that that were early sports bars. None of them exist anymore. You’ve got some restaurants, and certainly, the Sticky Wicket has a games room where they show sports events and stuff like that. Truly, I don’t really want to compete with those guys. I think they’re looking to serve a different demographic.”

As per the name “Game Seven”?

“I am a real, real sports fan, but I don’t really tie my allegiance to a lot of teams … But what I absolutely love is potential sports history. And every time there’s a game 7, there’s potential for something to happen in that event that could be sports history. So I have a real hard time not paying attention to Game 7 or their equivalent. So I thought that would just be a real fun name.”

Once the new menu gets executed, guests will be able to enjoy rotating sports bar features of classic pub fare with an elevated twist, made by executive chef John Waller. Items will include crispy chicken sandwiches, nachos, ribs and burger options, alongside the restaurant’s regular full menu.

2020:

New restaurant at Hotel Rialto

Rob Ekstrom and Darren Cole are opening a new restaurant at the Hotel Rialto, leasing the space that was formally home to Veneto Bar Ristorante.

The Palms at The Hotel Rialto is expected to open in early August. Creating a new restaurant in the Hotel Rialto was an easy decision for the Danzo family, owners of the hotel.

“We admired their entrepreneurial spirit and are excited about their vision for this significant corner in the city,” says Jane Danzo. “Over the years we operated Veneto, we were blessed with a loyal clientele as well as exceptional restaurant/bar professionals, for which we are very grateful.

“We welcome The Palms, which will continue to provide a vibrant and rewarding restaurant/bar experience in the same location, the heart of downtown Victoria.”

According to Ekstrom and Cole (who many will remember from his days running Steeples at Shawnigan Lake), plans call for classic dishes with unique twists, a full cocktail menu, happy hour and late-night specials, and a Sunday brunch with live DJ.

The Palms has one of my favourite Happy Hours, but I doubt I will "cross the aisle" to Game Seven.

The Millstream Beverage Company brewpub has closed on Millstream at Treanor.

This is a rare opportunity to acquire a liquor primary pub/restaurant in a great high-traffic location in one of Victoria's fastest-growing communities. This business has been in operation for over a decade and is run by an absentee owner with management staff in place. The business has the highly sought-after liquor primary license which allows the business to operate as a bar which gives the operators flexibility in how they operate. Despite being a liquor primary, the pub has a massive and fully vented commercial kitchen space capable of handling the 200-seat restaurant with ease while providing ample prep space for catering opportunities. The recent approval of a Secondary Education Campus, just a short distance away will bring a brand new young demographic to the already busy area and continue to push sales to new highs. The pub is fully turn-key and only requires a re-branding to be operational. The price of the business is less than half the cost of the build-out in today’s market and offers a great opportunity for an operator to acquire a great pub/restaurant location with a proven track record of sales. This opportunity to acquire this business with its liquor primary license and fully turnkey build-out provides a savvy operator with a great opportunity to establish themselves in an already proven location. With build-out costs reaching all-time highs and the extreme amount of time required for licensing of a liquor primary license, this opportunity truly represents great value in today's market that will the next operator to be operational and profitable immediately.

Their outdoor patio area was always crowded, should have been a money maker.

Would this be the Indian place? I can’t think of anything else to that scale, near the new school.
