Cadboro Bay Village gets its coffee shop back

https://www.timescol...back-1.24324047

The Sparlings expect to open any day, awaiting final paperwork to clear through Saanich. The couple have been busy “de-Starbucking” the space for several months, have hired new staff and completed training, and are fine-tuning a menu that will include takeaway snacks and sandwiches for picnics on the nearby beach.

Will Sparling said the Cadboro Bay location is a perfect spot to replicate what the couple have in their Moka House in Cook Street Village. That location is extremely popular with area residents as well as others visiting Beacon Hill Park or shopping on Cook Street. On most days, the patios are overflowing — living up to its official name Moka House Coffee + Community.

Shatterbox Coffee is moving into a new, smaller space within the Public Market; the new space is along Douglas St so it might have exterior access too (currently it is along a bank of windows)…

There’s a large banner at the downtown Doubletree Hotel saying that Starbucks will be opening soon.

It looks like the hotel also got a new paint job? Passed by this afternoon and noticed that.

Starbucks baristas at Douglas and Alpha streets in Victoria have settled a collective agreement with the international coffee giant.

https://www.vicnews....h-coffee-giant/

On June 29, United Steelworkers (USW) announced that workers at the drive-thru location unanimously ratified a three-year deal the union says protects against workplace violence and aggression, offers leave following domestic violence and calls for wage increases of up to $2.47 per hour based on years of service.

missing from the article that everyone wants to know - how much will they be paid? but of course not answered by the article. lame.

I guess that’s not unlike Farmer’s Insurance in the US.

How else is one supposed to make that so called ‘bulletproof’ coffee’?

Staff at Wild Coffee (corner of Yates and Broad) are on strike today. I seem to recall they made news about 5 years ago for not paying their employees - seems like it's still an issue (among others...)

Interesting approach.. I feel for them, but I definitely won't be going there until I hear they have a new owner. Which I may never find out, so I'll just never go again. If they were going to quit anyways then this approach isn't as scorched earth as it appears.

Informal use of the term, I guess. Staff just kept the cafe closed and stood out front with signs and banners. Will be curious to see if they keep it up or if this was a one-day action while the owner's out of the country.

In other news, their Facebook page is advertising that they are hiring for part and full time baristas.

I know a young person who worked at a restaurant with a similar attitude toward overtime--they'd clock you out at eight hours even though there's always a half hour of clean-up left. I tried to explain how this was exploitive and he just gave me the "OK boomer" eyeroll like I was some sort of 1930s union organizer out of touch with the 21st century workplace culture.

I’m sure the tax free weekly cash tip out was nice, though.

Wild Cafe & Bistro, located at 632 Yates Street, has closed indefinitely.

A notice of repossession was posted to the former business’ front door on August 25th, and according to the post, the building owners have changed the locks and no one is allowed on the premises without their permission.

In late July, staff at Wild Cafe & Bistro refused to go to work after they claimed the owner wasn’t meeting basic employment standards.

Cafe Fantastico in Quadra Village seems to be framing an outdoor seating area.

No apparent progress at Bubby's across the street.

Bubby Rose is preparing to become a roaster of coffee and will use it for their cafe drinks whilst also offering it for sale to the public.  I think they will have the facility within their Quadra Village location, which might also explain why it's taking a while to open...
