Imagine if BC Ferries terminals were opened up to true competition like airports.

Another angle is to add semi truck sailings at 2AM and 4AM, or whatever. Upper decks can also be available to passengers but truckers know they can board 24 hours a day and don’t need to wait for 7AM.

Sounds like BC Ferries read your post, Mike.

VICTORIA – To better serve our commercial customers, BC Ferries is piloting late-night commercial sailings on the Tsawwassen – Duke Point route from Sept. 7 to Oct. 7, 2021.

The sailings, provided by the Queen of New Westminster, will depart Tsawwassen at 9:15 pm and depart Duke Point at 12:15 am Monday through Thursday evenings.

The additional sailings are expected to help to address the increased demand for commercial goods that has been driven by the growth of e-commerce, groceries, and general freight. The pilot will determine customer reaction and gain valuable feedback.

A limited number of passengers travelling in underheight vehicles will also be accommodated on these sailings on the main car deck. BC Ferries recommends customers book these sailings in advance.

No catering services will be offered on these trips so BC Ferries encourages customers to bring a snack with them or to use the vending machines onboard.

what is that normal sailing time? is the idea to give some operators the ability to drop a trailer and then return to the mainland without trailer on the return sailing?

The current last sailing is 10:45PM. So yes, it looks like it may very well be to accommodate bobcats (tractors without the trailer) on the return to Tsawwassen.

Looks like they are planning on running with fewer staff on board, hence the lack of F&B. Smaller crews mean less available passenger capacity. We're often told that gift shop & cafeteria staff would have to be there anyway in order to accommodate safe evacuations. These sailings won't be able to accommodate as many people. But that's OK if the target is commercial vehicle operators or drop trailers instead of families.

Having said that, it's going to be confusing for people sailing to Duke Point.

The 8:15pm & 10:45pm sailings will have F&B.

But the 9:15pm won't.

Looks like they've set up pricing in order to discourage small passenger vehicle guests from reserving the 9:15pm sailing. Makes sense.

BC Ferries is expecting another busy Labour Day weekend, with the majority of sailing reservations between the Mainland and Vancouver Island already full as of Thursday morning.

From Tsawwassen to Swartz Bay, the majority of reservations are sold out Thursday, Friday and Sunday and all are sold out Monday. Most Saturday reservations remain available.

when the QoNW finally retires, I hoe she gets a good send-off.  she has bee a trooper.  since 1963.

Mechanical problems with the Spirit of Vancouver Island ferry have led to the cancellation of a pilot program for night sailings on the Duke Point-Tsawwassen route.

The Spirit of Vancouver Island, which normally sails between Swartz Bay and Tsawwassen, is being replaced by the Queen of New Westminster on that route. That means the Queen of New Westminster has had to be pulled off the Duke Point-Tsawwassen run for the time being.

Though her four Victoria class sister ships were all scrapped by 2012, she had a major refit of her passenger areas between late 2007 and early 2009 to prepare her for another ten to fifteen years of service.

Part of the issue is problems with one of the Spirit class vessels. Shifting a Queen over is still like, half the capacity of that slot is gone.

i guess not as much lost, but still a chunk. passengers too. If you're a walk-on this weekend, I recommend getting a reservation.

Yes. It's rare that walk-ons are full, but it has happened.

Note that a lot of the walk-on reservations for tomorrow are already sold out.
