🚔Stolen wallet from unlocked vehicles leads to $10,000 in fraudulent charges; Langford woman arrested🚔

On August 1st 2019, the West Shore RCMP received a report of theft from a parked vehicle.

The complainant advised their wallet had been stolen from their vehicle which was left unlocked.

The very next day a suspect impersonating the complainant attended a money lending business and took out loans for over $10,000. In addition to this, the suspect is alleged to have changed the complainant’s personal information through Equifax and Trans Union (agencies that deal with credit scoring).

The West Shore RCMP Crime Reduction Unit headed up the investigation. After identifying the suspect through video surveillance, police arrested 32 year old Crystal Bemister who is a resident of Langford. A search warrant was executed on Crystal Bemister’s home where police seized other items that were reported stolen, including a camera and identification from another victim.

On September 24th 2019, Crystal Bemister was charged with one count of theft under $5000, one count of fraudulent use of a computer, 3 counts of fraud and 3 counts of impersonation.

“We get daily calls for service regarding theft from unlocked vehicles. This particular theft led to the complainant’s personal information being compromised. Please do not leave your valuables in your car. Adopt a nightly routine of locking your car doors and check to make sure your home is secure before going to bed,” said Cst. Nancy Saggar, Media Relations Officer West Shore RCMP.

🚔Selling a car in the Capital Region? Be on the lookout for a fraudster, police warn🚔

Victoria, BC – Officers are warning the public to be on the lookout for bank draft fraud attempts after a car seller derailed an alleged fraud attempt.

On October 13th, a woman reported that she was selling a used vehicle online and had been contacted by a potential buyer. The “buyer” attended her residence to test drive the vehicle. When he arrived, the “buyer” indicated he was in a rush and wanted to immediately complete the transaction. He handed the seller an envelope containing completed transfer papers and the full asking price for her vehicle, with “payment” in the form of a bank draft. The seller began to review the documents.

Unbeknownst to the “buyer”, the seller has experience in the financial services sector and works with bank drafts. She immediately saw that the “bank draft” was a photocopied fake. She returned to the vehicle to discover the “buyer” zap strapping new license plates to the vehicle. She confronted the individuals, who apologized, cut the plates from the vehicle and fled the area. The seller then called police. The seller was not physically injured in the incident and was able to derail the potential fraud.

The “buyer” is described as a 40-year-old, slim, Caucasian male with a tanned complexion, standing five feet, seven inches tall. He had short, black hair, wore glasses and smelled strongly of cigarette smoke.

If you have information about this suspect or have been victimized by him, you’re asked to call our non-emergency line at (250) 995-7654 or Greater Victoria Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

wouldn’t it just be the cheque? it would not be hard to walk into monk and ask them to make a copy of a cheque even if a colour copy might by an unusual request.

the blank transfer papers you pick up anywhere.

in this case the “buyer” has his half filled out to try to get the whole thing over quick. also so the seller does not suggest going to their bank of insurance place to do the forms.

Victoria police Const. Matt Rutherford said police did not want to describe the specific techniques used to locate the fugitive, but other agencies, including the Regional Domestic Violence Unit, were involved.

“We have to write a production order for user information and there are various other warrants we can use to track people through those means.

Whether it was IP addresses specifically for this, I’m not sure, but any time we get information from a telecom provider or social-media company, we have to request it through a warrant.”

Normandin remained active on Facebook and Twitter after he jumped bail.

Three teens detained after report of sex assault at Galey Farms corn maze

Saanich police are investigating a report of a sexual assault involving a 16-year-old girl in the Galey Farms corn maze.

Police said the girl was walking through the maze with her mother on Friday when she was touched from behind in a sexual way. Prior to that, comments had been made by some boys nearby.

____________

The mother and daughter quickly identified a group of 13-year-old boys, but weren’t able to pinpoint which boy was responsible because there were so many people in the area.

Galey Farms staff stepped in to help and three teenagers were detained when police arrived. The parents of the boys were contacted.

Police are looking for witnesses or anyone else who might have been approached in a similar way, and are working to identify who touched the girl.
