The fact that they have the team store open at all during the off-season is a bit of an anomaly. Even major professional teams (i.e. NHL, NFL, MLB, NBA...) tend to shut down or reduce hours at team stores during the off-season.

Historical CPL moment today: Ottawa was announced as the very first expansion franchise in league history today. When the 2020 season kicks off in April the league will have an even number of 8 teams competing.

Hopefully this last point will help eliminate the silly bye weeks that existed last year.

Spanish soccer giant Club Atletico de Madrid has purchased an expansion team for Ottawa in the Canadian Premier League.

The Ottawa side will become the professional league’s eighth team when the CPL’s second season begins in April.

On behalf of the Canadian Premier League, Commissioner David Clanachan has released the following statement:

“The CPL has made the difficult decision to postpone the start of the 2020 season, scheduled to commence on April 11, 2020.

We have made this decision in support of the announcement by Canada Soccer on March 13th banning all sanctioned soccer activities in Canada, and the directive by our respective governments and health officials to ban all public gatherings.

We will continue to work with all of those authorities in order to make a decision on when to begin our 2020 season when it is declared safe by the relevant health and government agencies, including our governing body Canada Soccer.

Sport in our country has long been a rallying point for our nation both from a leadership and entertainment perspective and will continue to do so.

Collectively with our Clubs and Owners we unanimously agree that our number one priority is to protect the well-being of our fans, players, officials, employees and the general public.

We will continue to monitor closely all input from our government agencies and medical experts and maintain our consistent dialogue both internally and externally. As more information becomes available, we will provide public updates.”

David Clanachan
Canadian Premier League Commissioner

so this alberta decision has effectively wiped out the CFL and the CPL for this season.

As the Calgary Stampede and Calgary Folk Music Festival both announced the cancellation of their premiere summer events Thursday, Alberta’s top doctor said no festivals or large gatherings will be able to take place until September at the earliest.

The blanket ban on summer events and festivals is necessary because of COVID-19’s ability to “spread like wildfire in large groups of people,” Alberta chief medical officer of health Dr. Deena Hinshaw said.

The Canadian Premier League has joined the Canadian Football League in asking the federal government for financial assistance during the global pandemic.

The eight-team pro soccer league has asked Ottawa for "short-term financing" of $15 million, saying it is working "on any and all scenarios" related to playing a season in 2020.

The CFL can't support itself on TV revenue they need the gate and concession sales.

Wouldn't like to lose the CFL but at what cost do we keep any teams?

why do we need to lose them?  take a year off.  bare your staff down to minimum and come back next year.  it's not like they will lose market share or whatever when gone.

that's what local clubs will end up doing.  harbourcats shamrocks rebels bchl and vijhl etc.

It’s dubbed the “single-site solution” and it could be the vehicle by which the Canadian Premier League plays the 2020 soccer season in some semblance through the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We at the league office are very interested in this idea of playing an event where we bring all the teams together and how that would work,” CPL commissioner David Clanachan, said during an online chat with fans of CPL club Atlético Ottawa.

Major League Soccer has ESPN’s Wide World of Sports in Orlando, Florida, for its restart. The Canadian Premier League has a Dickensian tale of two vying cities on opposite coasts. It is between Langford and Charlottetown, with the latter saying it has the lead for the CPL restart.

Charlottetown announced Friday it is “a leading contender to serve as host city for this year’s modified Canadian Premier League season.”

“Charlottetown is open for business,” Mayor Philip Brown said in a statement.

“I’m excited to be able to extend an invitation to the Canadian Premier League and its eight member teams to play their modified single-city season in the birthplace of Confederation. It doesn’t get any more Canadian than right here in Charlottetown.”

Not so fast, says Langford. The old joke is Langford may only be the birthplace of the mullet, not the nation, but it’s the fastest-growing community in B.C. and one of the fastest in Canada with a young, family-oriented demographic. It is also home to Pacific FC of the CPL, while Charlottetown does not have a team in the league.

“Both cities are good, but ours is better. I think this will be the best place for the restart and we have a good chance of getting it,” said Langford Mayor Stew Young.

There’s a big building being constructed across the street from the soccer stadium. Maybe that’s where Rugby Canada is moving?

Are you talking about the one under construction on Leigh Road where they had the temporary parking lot last year? Or the one on Glen Lake Road?
