The Leigh Road building at the intersection with Langford Parkway. I’m not familiar with the area, but maybe that’s where a parking lot used to be?

Gotchya. That's a new addition to the Henry Eng Industrial Park being built there, lots of mostly warehouse space as I understand it.

I haven't heard anything from Rugby Canada regarding a move, but keep in mind that they recently completed the Al Charron National Training Centre across the street from their head office building. Rugby Canada has been going through some major, costly litigation with their national team players, but I haven't heard anything about them closing up shop in Langford. If anything I could see them consolidating operations into the single Al Charron building and giving up their space across the street. They have definitely faced major challenges due to COVID-19.

Rugby Canada did lease out their former office space in Richmond Hill, Ontario, so perhaps there is some confusion around which location they have vacated.

Oh crazy. It’s a pretty imposing structure with window cut outs in untraditional spaces. I’ll snap a photo next time I’m in the area.

This is interesting. I wonder what happened to Westhills Land. With the use and profile of that park it seems odd that any one would give up the naming rights. Is it a bid process and they were out bid?

They inferred they were no longer interested in the naming rights, and would pass them on. Back in 2012 when they took over the rights from Bear Mountain, Westhills benefited from the rights, but now that the neighbourhood is so established they don’t really need to commit the funding at the stadium.

My understanding is the CEO of Starlight is a huge soccer fan and this was his personal pursuit.

Good for Westhills. That's a fair bit of change to put out each year if you really don't need to.

Starting about 4 or 5 years ago when we moved back to the CRD II thought they had really turned the corner and their "brand" marketing really took off.

Yup, they’ve done well. Honestly I didn’t see this coming as the stadium is right at the community, but it makes sense as people arriving at the stadium will be presented with the community right next door.

Why pay, everyone will still call it Westhills Stadium!

Yeah but the stadium wasn't used to the extend that it is now.

Our plans call for the start of play this Spring - while recognizing that a major factor will be our nation's progress against this pandemic.  Based on where we are right now, if health authorities say it is safe to do so, we are focused on targeting a start date of the Victoria Day long weekend (May 22, 2021) – Canada’s “unofficial start of summer”.

Canadian international Marcel de Jong is president of PFACan. The 34-year-old, who retired as a Pacific FC player last Friday, says he understands the CPL is a new league.

"But it's been two years now and I think that's enough time for the league to make some adjustments and see what it did wrong and correct them," he said.

  • The league says its average player pay in 2021 is around $40,000, which may include housing, car allowances and incentive bonuses. The league says the top end of the salary scale is $77,000.
  • There will be a minimum player salary of $22,000 in 2021, which including other compensation is expected to reach $26,000. The league says it had a "target" minimum salary in the past but is now "raising and codifying it."
  • The minimum does not cover those on U-Sports contracts, who play during the summer while not at school. Clanachan said those deals would be in the range of $10,000 to $12,000.
  • Options on player contracts come with 15 per cent raises on average, according to the league.

Champ, however, said there are CPL players with contacts under $10,000 with a "large number" in the low teens. They would now be eligible for a bump in salary, according to the league figures.

It was super busy at the stadium yesterday. I went to a store along Langford Parkway and was totally caught off guard by the volume of people making their way to Starlight.

It was nice to see.

They put a decent product on the field and if it wasn't for some mental lapses, they would have won 2-0 instead settling for a 2-2 at home.  I was commenting to some friends that I ran into there how it's a nice, family outing and that Starlight Stadium great little venue - and will be even better once that bloody hydro pole is buried on the far side.

As much as townies look down on the Westshore, they're less averse to enjoying a good time.  Unlike Victoria, where so-called progressive councillors are too dour to allow us any frivolities, like enjoying a local sports team at a state-of-the-art municipal venue, while there's all the suffering that we ought to be feeling bad and writing letters about.

There was no announcement Friday from Canada Soccer on whether Pacific FC will meet Jozy Altidore, Michael Bradley, Jonathan Osorio and the rest of Toronto FC at Starlight Stadium in Langford or BMO Field in Toronto.

Details of the Canadian Championship semifinal date and venue for PFC’s match-up against the Major League Soccer club were expected to be unveiled but have been delayed.

Pacific FC is heading to the Canadian Premier League finals after an extra-time 2-1 win against Cavalry FC in Calgary Saturday.

It’s a first for the franchise and the latest achievement in a season which has included toppling a Major League Soccer team and posting its best record yet.
