Maybe our homeless should consider heading down to CA. CA is a sanctuary state after all so no immigration issues…. weather is much nicer there than here, and even MORE services….

If we can help people live a better life, why not? Perhaps a weekly Coho run from Victoria? Ok, that would mess up the schedule, maybe the Clipper. Sure would be some fun going down the open waters of the coast too!

A commercial building in Victoria suffered hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage following an afternoon blaze, firefighters say.

According to a Victoria Fire Department press release, crews responded to a structure fire at a commercial building on 247 Russell St. at around 12:00 p.m. on Saturday.

Victoria FD says when crews arrived on scene, dark visible smoke could be seen coming from the rooftop area of the building.

_________

There were no injuries, however, the blaze caused an estimated $400,000 in damage to the building, with smoke damaging products inside the structure.

The shelter is at 225 Russell but residents are required not to set any fires within 50 meters of it.  Not clear if 247 is in the restricted zone or not.

I guess we have Al Tysick to thank for the “new and improved” Pandora street.

I drove down Pandora yesterday morning.  Two or three blocks of it would shame a third world slum.  Shabby vagrants hanging around, garbage and trash strewn everywhere, a police van parked outside OP.  Al’s brilliant legacy.

I feel sorry for the owners of condos in that area. Welcome to your new condo lifestyle.

Except for those who bought into it. Probably got a good deal and it’s a choice they made. But for those who were already there, my heart goes out to them. There should be compensation for the neighbours when the government moves something like this in your neighborhood.

Clover Point?

WTF is with Geoff Young?  He needs to explain himself before the next election.  Regardless of whether he wants to run again or not, what a career sticking disaster.

He is a curious case indeed.  On most issues he comes down on the right side, but now and then his relentless obsession with closing park roads surfaces.  It started a long time ago when they blocked off Heywood and installed those ridiculous bollards near the petting zoo.  I don’t know how he voted on all the other irritating road blockages but I’ve certainly never heard a peep of protest from him.  It’s about time for his gold watch.

Pilot ‘Peer Assisted Crisis Team’ coming to Victoria as alternative to police response

August 13, 2021

A new mental health response team will be coming to Victoria as part of a pilot project that will serve as an alternative to police response.

Funding received by the City of Victoria will be used to create the ‘Peer Assisted Crisis Team’. The team will be the first to show up mental health crises, where normally the police are first.

The new program, brought to the police board by the Victoria Police chief in 2020, is similar to a program in Eugene, Oregon called ‘Crisis Assistance Helping Out On The Streets’, or CAHOOTS.

The teams are made up of a nurse, paramedic or EMT and a crisis worker with experience in the mental health field.

“Sometimes when people are having a mental health breakdown what they need is peer support health care, not the police,” said Helps.

Potts dreamchild, but how is this better than what we have today with the distributed team?  I am not sure she really understand Cahoots or she is using it as a lever to defund.

As Seattle Politicians defund their law enforcement agency with the idea that social workers can replace cops on certain calls, one social worker was recently assaulted and another was stabbed to death.

https://www.lawoffic...defunds-police/

Partnership with police has always been essential to our model. I don't have a coherent vision of a society that has no police force.

David Zeiss, the program's co-founder

Skinner, the Eugene police chief, said reallocating funds from Eugene police would stifle the department, which is already money-tight, and its ability to do the work to defend CAHOOTS when situations turn violent.

https://www.cnn.com/...trnd/index.html

How the 'defund the police' debate is playing out in Oakland

“A significant amount of that movement calling for defunding without regard for those calling for service don’t reflect my community,” he said. “They’re not the ones making the two-thirds of the calls to 911.”

Homicides already jumped by 47% in Oakland in 2020, and they are set to jump by another 45% again this year. For the sake of the remaining residents of Oakland, hopefully Taylor can win more Democrats to his side.

So our tax dollars are funding the Crisis Response Assistance Program…better known as CRAP.

I would like to know who is responsible for deciding whether to send police or this 'Peer Assisted Crisis Team'?

Helps is inviting further incentive to crime and disorder now that they know they can get away with worse behaviour more often.

And as with all perceived mental health crises, real or fabricated, you never truly know the full risk potential of the person in crises.

Happy stabby times.

Had to go to the mall next to the comfort Inn on Blanchard this week. What a mess there: drug deals and people shooting up everywhere.

Took a walk in BHP yesterday: young people shooting up right by the street on the edge of the park for everyone to see - definitely no stigma there. heartbreaking to see what is happening to this generation.

It must be the dispatchers, at least initially.  Hard to know how they would have enough information to make the appropriate decision.

The good news is that only a small percentage of these cases involve a violent, armed lunatic, so it will probably be several weeks before the crisis team begins to take casualties.

in some other cities the police still hang about nearby. so it just more layers of labour tagged on. like how police have to escort bylaw officers or paramedics sometimes now.
