glacier (the tc publisher) asks for $5/mo. pledge from readers for their free papers:

I no longer get their free papers because they have put less than zero effort into journalism for the last decade.  They also took a very good set of websites and made them useless for finding stories.

If they want support they need a lot more stories and a lot more of them have to dig into the muck of local government and report on it

The loss of all the Glacier free papers would be a net benefit for society.

There really isn’t much of substance in these publications, is there?

I think you had a typo in that sentence, I think you meant "any" and not "much"

You say these things yet we all quote, share and discuss Black Press articles here on VV constantly.

Curious.

You wonder how local media in general can continue publishing when ad revenue has gone close to zero. I wouldn't be surprised if most just didn't shut down and ride this out unless they can apply the 75% wage cost benefit.

both black press and martlet have complained about downtown newspaper box removal.

so the council has decided to revisit in september after those organizations make their case.

strange it was a dvba request and they'd want downtown businesses to have less exposure to ad space.

I think it's just a bluff to force them into cleaning up their boxes more often. Those box clusters are a disaster area.

that's reasonable.  i wish the garbage companies would clean their bins of graffiti too.

Indeed, they're awful. And from time to time they're also dangerous obstructions on roadways after the Thetis Lake Park Idiots® make their way through downtown and shove them into travel lanes.

They're also sources of trash in the downtown core and if we're being honest, they are conduits for circulation numbers despite sitting around unread by the dozens.

Yes but the Martlet weighing in trumps everything else. Can't upset the UVIC socialists.

breaking news this weekend:

i'll tell you what is quite unnatural.  wild arc taking in injured wildlife.  that were injured or abandoned or otherwise put in distress for reasons that have little to do with humans.  then resuscitating them feeding them repairing injuries then releasing them.   that's dangerous.  and quite pointless really.  for every animal they "save" just on vancouver island there is likely millions that die from causes other than "old age".  so what's the point?

i know what the point is.  it makes the humans doing this work feel better.

just like feeding ducks makes people - especially kids - feel better.

Basic world history eludes Black Press editors.

The gardens were created in 1846, the year Prince and Princess Abkhazi – who both spent time in internment camps during the Second World War but found their way back to one another – married and settled in Victoria.

It's not unusual for a local paper to do a story when a high-schooler is chosen for the Parliamentary page program. What's strange is you thinking it's strange.
