I would not be surprised if this passes, It is being sold as a Covid recovery measure. The tempoarart measure passed 100 to nothing.

Maybe we can rename Ogden Point the Broken District instead of Breakwater.

so let me get this right.  cruise ships have been coming here for decades.

and we do not do an annual survey of say 500 or 1000 random tourists downtown and ask them as one question, what brought you here?

A harbour authority passenger survey in 2015 found more than 60 per cent of cruise passengers planned to return to Victoria.

“I understand there are some businesses that question the value of cruise, but I think that takes a narrow view,” said Robertson. “There is significant benefit and they do spend significant time in town.”

Robertson admitted there is little hard data on just how many did actually return to Victoria, but he said there is plenty of anecdotal evidence among business owners in the city.

Nursey said given the state of tourism, this is no time to be turning away an important slice of the market.

“Signals from our top political leaders mean a lot,” he said. “We are looking for some action from our federal leaders and some positive signals from our provincial leaders. If they choose not to send those signals there likely will be consequences.”

We are fully backed into a corner.

Trudeau is killing Alberta energy. What’s to stop him from telling BC to ‘find another way’ (a favourite modern term) to bring in tourism dollars? And tourism doesn’t really jive with a climate crisis in the first place.

I have been on an Alaskan cruise and have never returned to one of the ports we visited.

The survey is from 2015. Victoria has changed a lot since. I wonder what a 2019 survey would have found.

The Greater Victoria Harbour Authority is calling on Transport Canada to repeal an order suspending cruises in Canada until March 2022.

Harbour authority CEO Ian Robertson has asked the federal body to end that suspension this fall to allow B.C.’s $2.6-billion cruise industry to gear up for a return in 2022, while adhering to Public Health Safety of Canada measures.

A temporary exemption to the US Passenger Vessel Services Act, signed in May, permits cruise ships to bypass Canada for 2021, but if made permanent would decimate the industry, the harbour authority states.

My guess is that we would lose about 90% of the cruise ships.  Perhaps a go cart track on the docks of Ogden point might be a great alternative.

a two-stroke engine proving ground would be great to keep up the emissions. or a windmill.

maybe another Safeway? Or IKEA.

we could get that submarine to break the ice and bring in freighters from Sweden direct through the northwest passage to Ogden point.

I trust we upgraded the hull to bust up ice? Or installed a laser to do the same? we must have done something serious for it to take a decade.

That would be a great weekend draw for the new colwood ferry.
