Big news out of Cook Street Village this week on the local food scene:

  1. Jam is opening up their second Victoria location (third overall) in Lenny Cole's rental building on Cook & Oliphant Streets.
  2. The Village restaurant group has recently purchased and will be taking over Bubby's Kitchen by week's end.

That is all.

Fourth overall. Jam opened a location in Kitsilano on Sunday :)

Urban Core Ventures messaged us to say that it's not opening in Lenny Cole's 200 Cook Street building. Do we have an updated location?

The mystery question is what's going to go into the old Chapters, now that they have re-opened as an IDIGO at Mayfair?

I am pretty sure it has been announced that Shoppers Drug Mart will be relocating to the former Chapters space on Douglas.

Any truth to the rumour that a windigo was seen at Mayfair?

I like the Parliamentary dining room.  Most people don't know it's even there, or that it is open to the public.

I did notice however that after all these years, they have finally put a permanent menu board out in front of the building for everyone to see. It offers a silver service menu by an award winning chef. Public access is between 11am-1pm when the Legislative Assembly is sitting

Great food, top service, and everything on the menu is basically $12 bucks and under. I just happened to accidentally stumble across it about 4 years ago. I was highly impressed with both the quality of the food and the professional service. And like I said everything on the menu is more or less 12 dollars and under.

You have to turn in your driver's license to  security if you want to go in. He gives you an electronic FOB KEY, Then you go down this long hall and down some stairs and you use the key to access that part of the building and there's the restaurant down in the basement.

To my knowledge it is the oldest continually operating restaurant in Victoria.

Sorry, the information that I was given was about Jam and Village came from a very reliable source.  But if UCV as the landlord confirmed that it's not there, then I suppose that's pretty definitive.  Perhaps it's going elsewhere in the Village, e.g., Pic-a-Flic?  The Bubby's news is rock solid, though - they take over as operator tomorrow.

Yup, all good. UCV just wanted to reiterate that it's not in their space.

That's done on purpose. They are de-facto subsidized (eg they don't pay rent), so they don't want to be seen as competing with local restaurants. It is a nice spot though!

From front page of the web site "

Public Access to the Dining Room

Public access to the Parliamentary Dining Room is limited between 11:00 am and 1:00 pm when the Legislative Assembly is sitting. "  It just reads funny that's all. When reading it, it can be interpreted as public access is limited to the hours of 11am-1pm when LA is sitting, or it can be interpreted as public access limited to the times outside of that time frame. Just depends how you interpret it when reading it from the website. It's one of those ones that can be seen in two different ways.

I agree it's poorly worded, and the listed public times on the right of the page are far more clear.

Chuck's Burger Bar is open in the former Famous Original Pizza location on Yates. Their original location is in Sidney.

From what I’ve heard, it’s pretty good.

Their bar manager is a former mixologist from Veneto from before the renovation. All of the original bar staff left once they re-opened.

My source was very confused when I told him that UCV disputed that Jam was going in their building.

The only other space that makes sense is if Jam leased out and combined the old Booster Juice and Rainbird Boutique spaces.  Either that or the Cook & Pendergast development, unless the entire commercial space is taken up by the daycare.  Unless they have no plans at all to expand into a second Victoria location.

Went there for lunch today with the famiglia.  There was a sign on the door delaying their opening today by 1/2 hour to noon because they got absolutely killed last night and hadn't been able to re-prep for the day.  By the time noon hit and the doors opened, the lineup was more than 20 deep.

The burgers were as off-the-hook as we had expected: a very good mouth feel and perfect Angus flavour.  Huge portion of burger and fries.  No kid-friendly options, other than customizing your burger - and then it's still full-sized.  We made due and the rest of the burger served for dinner.  We did enjoy the massive 24 oz pours of beer for $9 taxes inc.

Met one of the owners, who was an affable fellow.  For only being day three, there didn't seem to be any egregious opening errors, aside from some items that were still 86'd from last night.  That is, it didn't feel like they really had too many kinks to work out.  Skip the Dishes is something that they will onboard soon, as well as weekly specials (like in Sidney).  They will do well very in that space, noon and night.
