VicPD Locates High-Risk Missing Woman Shirley Book After Extensive Search

Date: Tuesday, September 20, 2022 - File: #22-35935

Victoria, BC – VicPD officers located high-risk missing woman Shirley Book at approximately 4:40 a.m. this morning after an extensive search.

She is safe and has been reunited with her family.

Officers began an extensive search for Shirley just before 10:30 p.m. last night. She had not been seen for over six hours when it was discovered that she had not returned home and was reported missing to VicPD.

During the search, in addition to extensive foot and vehicle patrols, officers contacted hospitals, shelters, BC Transit and taxis, and issued a high-risk missing person alert.

Given the length of time she had been missing, officers, coordinated with both the Oak Bay Police Department and the Saanich Police Department, who conducted extensive foot and vehicle patrols in their service areas.

VicPD officers continued our search, returning to her residence and conducting a second, extensive search of her building.

At one point, officers received information that she may have been at Swan Lake park in Saanich. Working with E-Comm 911 dispatchers, officers were able to clarify that the location was actually Beacon Hill Park. Officers conducted an extensive search of the park grounds.

Officers remained in contact with Shirley’s family, keeping them updated as the search progressed.

At approximately 4:40 a.m. a VicPD officer searching for Shirley located her at McKenzie Avenue and Moss Street. The officer transported Shirley home to her family and remained with her until BC Emergency Health Services paramedics arrived to confirm her good health.

Thank you to everyone who shared Shirley’s information and our partners across the region for your efforts in helping bring her home safe to her family.

I’m quite consistent, actually.

I sometimes ask for more information to try to FIND the person.

But I rarely if ever ask for the play-by-play of the finding. Which in this case just seemed like a fluke despite the VicPD elaborating on all their techniques here.

A typical press release when they find a previously listed missing person is two sentences.

For this it’s 10 paragraphs.

It’s rubbish. It’s an agenda. Gone too far.

Port Alberni man missing for 5 years has been found alive, but he says it’s not him

Sep. 25, 2022

A Port Alberni missing persons case that went nowhere for five years appears to have been solved by Burnaby RCMP. Or has it?

Screenshot 2022-09-25 19.01.20.png

Brandon Cairney was 31 years old when he vanished from Port Alberni in October 2017. But on Friday the host of a Port Alberni-based podcast called Island Crime received a tip saying a missing person had been found in Burnaby the day before.

Cairney was questioned by police after being found sleeping on a park bench in Burnaby but this is where what should be a happy ending, takes an unfortunate turn.

“So he is identified by his fingerprints after he is picked up and then, unfortunately, Brandon tells police and Border Services that he is an American citizen, he goes by a different name and says he’s not Brandon Cairney,” Palmer told CHEK News on Sunday.

Cairney had minor brushes with the law before he went missing which is why police have his fingerprints.

He had also suffered a major brain injury in a car accident that nearly killed him when he was 19 years old and it affected his day-to-day life ever since.

“As far they could tell he was in good health and clear-minded enough to say he didn’t want anything to do with Brandon Cairney’s life and insistent on that is not who he is,” Palmer said.

They do not know where Brandon Cairney is now but his family says they would desperately like to talk to him and that the relief of him being found is just being replaced by even more urgent questions.

Almost exactly five years after his disappearance at age 31, the Island’s Brandon Cairney seems to have been found in Burnaby after apparently being in the US. But the identified person insists that he is not Cairney—a Port Albernian who was a high school star athlete but changed dramatically after a brain injury.

Laura Palmer, the host of the podcast Island Crime, was tipped off last week that one of the missing people she had profiled had reappeared. After speaking to some different families, she discovered it had been Cairney. She ended up talking to the family of Cairney and releasing a brief update in which the family provides what new information they have on him and his recent interactions with police and border services. They also discuss his conviction that he is not Cairney, and his refusal to have any contact with the family.

“We’re all trying to let it sink in,” Brandon’s uncle Mark Cairney told Palmer. “It’s good to know and we’ll let him continue on. If he chooses to contact any of us, that will be great but that’s his choice.”

So how does this guy support himself, and who is served well by just letting him exist aimlessly out on the streets now?
