Yes - I had parked on Broughton at a spot with no meter. I actually parked there all day for about a week or so. I would park at about 8AM and then always check the spot at noon or so, to make sure my vehicle was OK. I even called the Commissionaires, and based on my description of the situation (no meter head, no sticker on the pole), they said that spots like those are known as "dead zones," and therefore unenforceable.

One afternoon I came back to find a ticket...and a newly installed meter. I mailed in a dispute to the so-called Parking Review Office and asked them to review the Public Works records to confirm that the Meter Shop had only installed a meter that morning. This was the response I received (paraphrased):
A meter was installed at 9:47AM. You were given 90 minutes on the new meter and the ticket was issued at 12:14PM. The ticket is therefore valid.
Seriously? Wow.

As a general guideline, here is how the process normally works:
  1. Receive a ticket.
  2. Mail in a dispute to the Parking Review Office (helps to have photo evidence).
  3. Have the ticket upheld in 100% of cases, because the "Review" in Parking Review Office is a misnomer.
  4. Go to the Courthouse and have a trial date set in Traffic Court.
  5. Attend Traffic Court, which is overseen by a Justice-of-the-Peace.
  6. Answer role call.
  7. Wait for the role call of the prosecutor (in this case, the Commissionare).
  8. Confirm that the Commissionaire has not shown up.
  9. Go free.
In none of the other parking cases that day (or that I had observed any other time I have attended Traffic Court) did the Commissionaire show up. I believe the mentality of the City is that it has infinite legal resources, and therefore disputes absolutely any and all parking charges, legitimate or otherwise. Most of the time, the public to just gives up and pays the ticket, forgets to set a trial date or once set, forgets to appear. The City counts on this. For the half dozen or so parking cases per day that to end up going to trial, it's not worth their effort to have the Commissionaire attend.

What an absolute waste of time, money and (scarce) resources.

Of course, why else would we be talking about parking tickets in this thread.

I had sushi at ebizo after my parking dispute victory. Nothing beats their tuna tataki - except their tuna tataki washed down with sake and a side of justice!!!

If we could only set the system up so that no one actually HAD to be there. Since the outcome is 100% in favour of the plaintiff if they show up and 100% in favour of the city if they do not show up then perhaps some sort of phone process would be better. You just call in and ask the court to imagine yourself there.

We've been eating a fair amount of sushi lately (last night it was at Kaz again). We're realizing that about half to 2/3s of the time we're overcharged for something (on one occasion we were actually undercharged). Not huge amounts, but last night we examined the bill and we were charged $2 for a soup we never ordered. This doesn't seem to happen nearly as often as non-sushi joints, so I chalk it up to the fast-paced a la carte method of ordering that seems to confuse the servers, especially those that have little experience. So I would recommend keeping track of what you order and make sure the server understands your order.

There is no better sushi in Victoria than the Marina. It's a simple fact. Really, it's the rice that makes it. We do not serve a full Japanese menu (what with not being a Japanese restaurant and all...) but the rolls, sashimi and nigiri cannot be beat. I have eaten sushi everywhere, and keep coming to this conclusion. David is the man.

In the interest of full disclosure, I do work there, but don't make the sushi, which is probably why it's so good although I do drop a mean tempura.

Matt.

I've always avoided that place as it's just been written off in my head as a high-fallutin' rich people's restaurant. Is it worth going for the sushi?

Better than ebizo? That's where the bar is set in this town.

At least as good.

Prices for sushi are on par with Ebizo - be wary of cheap sushi.

Be wary of cheap sushi in Victoria, at least. There's an outfit in the Lower Mainland called Su****own - I wish we could have one in Victoria!! There are I think 4 locations now in the Lower Mainland and their prices are ridiculous - I have no way how they make any money, even on volume (we're guessing that there's some kind of Yakuza fishmonger connection, heheh). And the kicker is that it is really, really, really good, high-quality sushi.

Check it out: http://maps.google.ca/places/ca/burn...wn?hl=en&gl=ca.

EDIT: OH FOR THE LOVE OF SHIVA!!! S-U-S-H-I-T-O-W-N!!!

Is the sushi just in the main dining room or can you get it in the little cafe at the Marina?

I'd love to try it by myself, but feel funny sitting in the dining room on my own... well, I'd do it for lunch, just not dinner... is the sushi avail at lunch?

The cafe and the restaurant are totally seperate, so no. Sushi is not available at lunch at all, and you can usually get sushi in the dining room during dinner. However, your best bet is to sit in the sushi bar, either at a table or at the bar itself, and give it a try.

There are plenty of times during the week when sushi is not available in the dining room due to volume - the sushi bar itself gets priority.

Ah - okay - I didn't know there was an actual sushi bar in there... last time I was there to 'eat', there was only the main dining room and then the little cafe around 'back'.

Although the Marina's web site is't clear on hours for sushi bar itself:

Say they are open 11:30am until 2:30pm and 5pm to 9pm - which is fine for the dining room, but is it the same for the sushi bar?

Yeah, fair enough.

The sushi and dinner hours are the same. Sun-Thurs 5-9, Fri-Sat 5-10. Caveats about ordering sushi in the dining room as mentioned above apply. No sushi at lunch.

The cafe is located downstairs on the water, the restaurant sits right on top of it. They have a wonderful patio in the summer...

I don't know what's been happening at Fujiya Japanese Grocery/sushi takeout (shelbourne across from Fairway Market) but their sushi has dipped to the quality of "crap." Tasteless, poorly put together and far too much rice makes their offerings some of the worst contenders in town. Quality has been sliding over the past year but the latest sushi I picked up is so far below the quality of many of downtown's sushi places that I am definitely never going back.

Last time I was there there was lots of white people working there, that could account for the drop in quality.
